Visitors to Doncaster will be pleasantly surprised by the wide choice of leisure, retail and tourist activities, as well as the excellent transport links to the rest of the country and Europe. The rail station is approximately 6 miles from 'Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield', an international airport newly created following the redevelopment of a former RAF station. Carriers such as Thomsonfly, Ryanair and Wizzair connect Doncaster to major European cities such as Dublin, Geneva and Warsaw and many other Polish, Spanish and Portuguese destinations.
Transport has always played an important role in Doncaster's heritage. Horse breeding for the early stagecoach trade gave rise to Doncaster Racecourse, one of the oldest and largest racecourses in the country.
Historically the borough itself was known for its rich landowners with vast estates and stately homes such as Brodsworth Hall, Cantley Manor, Nether Hall, Wheatley Hall, Hickleton Hall and Cusworth Hall, many of which can still be visited today.
Nature lovers can explore the extensive parks, woodlands, wetlands and nature reserves that abound in the 226 square miles of the borough. Highlights include Sprotbrough Flash, one of the spectacular features of the Don Gorge, and Yorkshire Wildlife Trust sites such as Denaby Ings, Thorpe Marsh and Potteric Carr with their rich array of flora and fauna.
